Our Kantha blankets and throws are hand stitched by women in Bangladesh and they are perfect for summer picnics in Chicago! Your purchase of a blanket provides work for women who otherwise would be vulnerable to sex trafficking.
The beautiful, two-sided blankets are one-of-a-kind and hand stitched from reclaimed sari cloth. Each blanket is created by sewing six layers of vintage saris together with a kantha stitch. The stitch is similar to a quilt stitch which is a small straight linear stitch. In Sanskrit, the word “kantha” means “rags”. It is not easy to create a beautiful and functional blanket out of rags! But, the high demand for these unique blankets has taught the artisans to value their abilities and tradition.
The blankets are supplied to the Mustard Seed from a company called “Hand and Cloth”. They pay their artisans a fair wage so that the women can send their children to school. The company was founded in 2007 and the name “Hand and Cloth” represents the creative work the women do with their hands and also the healing work that God is doing in their lives.
